Once but one of the many Midwives in the city of Deci, referred to as a Hag, Nanny Hag rose above the others, rumoured to have simply eaten her former sisters, becoming herself something of a figure for local folklore. A gaunt harridan dressed in sombre black, she is a haughty, almost noble figure with her fleshless skin, her tightly bound hair and her wide mouth that stretches from ear to ear, filled with scores of sharp little teeth. Nanny Hag stalks the streets and ministers to those difficult births, ripping the babe from the belly of a recently dead mother.
Overtime Nanny Hag grew in power as became a figure of prayer and folkore. Said to dominate and eat those that would devour mothers in labour and children touched by cold, pestilence and the filth of Deci, absorbs them and becomes them. It might be so much worse without her, indeed it most certainly would but now the citizens pray to keep her away. People tread ever more carefully and fearfully, the city ever more nervous of the hunched and horrid figure that seems to flow about the darkened streets becomes too powerful, her presence too terrifying and now there is hardly anyone that does not know of her.
Folklore being a powerful thing people take steps to keep her away and since it is known that she cannot pass any portal where open scissors or shears are found on broken knives or scissors are nailed to most doors and leave dolls of mud and rag in left outside to divert her when such a home holds a pregnant woman. In Hightown, Deci, The Hallowed Hag, a Hallowed Temple built in her name to ensure she is properly respected and it is rumoured that she now stalks not just the streets of Deci but is seen further afield the very city itself now warded against her attentions...
