Deci is not like other cities and its Guilds are not always as those found elsewhere in the Empire, rumour would have it that the Traditions and Observations they use to found their supernatural power being born in brigandage and thievery. However, the Warsmiths are arguably the most honest of the cities Guilds they have taken their lead from Jander Sunstar and whilst they are able here to turn out suits of armour they also add a little iron to the city itself. Very proud craftsmen, the Warsmith’s cannot abide artisans that encroach upon their field and insist that the city only allows armour made by them to be sold in the city.
The importance of the Warsmith’s in the city becomes desperately obvious as their grandiose Guildhall and extensive workshops take up the whole side of one street and the sound of hammer and crashing metal resounds throughout the day. Much of the work is taken up with the apprentices for there are few Warsmith’s in a given nation and their skills are increasingly concentrated the larger and more proficient they become. Whilst the Masters of the Guild are able to produce incredible pieces of individual work it is consistent quality that the Guild strives for – suits of gleaming armour whose quality is not impaired by a single misjudged rivet, worn strap or ill fitted plate. It is said amongst the Warsmith’s that the quality of a bundle is judged by its worst suit.
As a structure The Warsmith’s King Hall nearly rivals the Spire for prominence and certainly, along with its peers, dominates the skyline such that it is often the first things seen by a traveller as he approaches from afar. An immense place of crashes, bangs and the repetition of hard toil. Oxen walk in immense wheels that power huge cogs and weighty hammers. The Guildsmen work on the detail and oversee the hundreds of wastrel works who do much of the actual donkey work. The Guildhall is an influential centre of power within the city and a source of potential influence throughout the Empire for the city’s Commisent for here dwell the greatest of the Empire’s warsmiths gather and the sound of their industry is both heard and smelt from afar. Strange and brutal tools hammer and turn metal, great stacks send the smog of industry into the skies over the settlement. The Guildhall itself is as grandiose as it is important with the very best material used and in many cases restored from other, now fallen edifices from the days of Principality, Republic, Magiocracy and now Empire.
The path that lead to the raising of this guildhall was not without some controversy though due to the acquisition of the skilled Guild Masters and Apprentices from The Rest that caused the collapse of the similar, although admittedly less advanced Guild Hall, in The Rest. Jander, having spoken with the then Lord Knight, Rivan Trakand, for permission to move the guildsmen to Deci, it being not just a far more suitable place for this guild but at the time the only city capable of supporting it, travelled to the Rest and took his followers from that city to Deci. Rumour has it that at the same time some force caused the near total collapse of the economy of The Rest leaving the Guildsmen with little choice but to relocate to Deci and with the completion of this guild in Septus IM 1007 Deci has been churning out a large percentage of the arms and armour that is so badly needed by the Empire’s Warbands.
