In Juon IM 1009, following the collapse of the Lord’s Market in Alguz due to the failing of the primal observances of the Imperial Foundation Guilds, Master Halfblack took the opportunity to enlarge the Grand Market in Deci’s Mercantile Quarter to replace the market lost to Alguz. Typically a market of such size and magnitude would take the standardised form of the Lord’s Market but with his deeper understanding of the mores of trade and commerce Master Halfblack had plans drawn up for something more suited not just to Deci but most specifically to Traders. Somewhat typically, before it was even built, the Decites renamed this great market in keeping with Deci slang and wit as “Anath’s Back Passage”. Despite such nomenclature lacking in the gravitas of “The Lord’s Market” the ever pragmatic Merchant and master of Deci traditions, simply shook his head and accepted the name with good grace and wry humour.
Unlike the Lord’s Market of other cities, Anath’s Back Passage (also called ‘Halfblack’s Chuff’ or ‘The Starfish’) spreads throughout the entirety of the Mercantile Quarter. It’s very construction saw houses, shops and even bridges knocked down to accommodate it. There were actually only a few places that it could have been built in Deci and actually work but work it does within the expanse of the Mercantile Quarter.
Much of the trade is from enterprising locals, and those from elsewhere that really, really don’t like the shiny, organised and damn difficult to screw with Markets found elsewhere. In commerce, a surprising number of people don’t like having their goods weighed, their measures checked, being lumped together for convenience and to be protected by a Watch that also asks damn fool questions. Something that would probably surprise other councils and through such foresight in its design master Halfblack was able to tempt less mobile Traders to set up pitches in the Mercantile Quarter.
